Music for Solitude was born out of the extended lockdowns and tumult of 2020 & 2021. These periods of isolation and upheaval led me to rediscover my deeply personal relationship with playing music detached from public performance. My focus was on making the violin ring in a way that would be pleasurable to the performer. This work was commissioned by the Santa Ynez Valley Concert series as part of violinist Johnny Gandelsman's commissioning and recording project “This is America”.
This is a short excerpt from Island, a multichannel audio installation comprised of field recordings made at Channel Islands National park. In this section we hear Max Mandel playing in Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island.
Abandon No. 2 is a work for solo piano that explores loss of self. Commissioned by pianist Julien Quentin, it was composed at the MacDowell Colony.
While automated weather radio warned of disaster, snow was falling almost silently outside my cabin in New Hampshire. Sound sources include automated weather stations, natural magnetic field distortions, wind and snow sounds, and Guillaume Pirard, Tom Chiu, Max Mandel, & Alex Greenbaum, strings.
This session for live electronics is comprised of manipulated radio recordings taken primarily from NASA's Voyager probe and other earth based recordings of our planet's magnetic field.
This short work for string quartet was inspired by the mysterious water images in Andrei Tarkovsky's films. Back Flow is the opening movement. Performed by the Flux Quartet.
